Is Ohio easy to homeschool in?

According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA),  in Ohio, homeschooling is relatively simple due to low regulations under the new Ohio Revised Code § 3321.042, effective October 2023. Parents can exempt their child from compulsory school attendance by homeschooling under two options.

For the first option, parents must submit a notice of intent to homeschool to the local school district superintendent by August 30th each year. The notice must include the parent's and child's names and an assurance that the child will receive education in the required subjects, which are English language arts, mathematics, science, history, government, and social studies. Parents must teach these subjects, but there are no specific teacher qualifications, minimum hours, or assessment requirements.

The second option allows parents to homeschool as a nonchartered, nonpublic school (NCNP). Teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent. NCNP schools must operate for a set number of hours based on grade level and teach subjects including language arts, geography, history, government, math, science, health, physical education, fine arts, and first aid. These schools must also follow promotion procedures, comply with health and safety laws, certify educational standards, report attendance, and file a report with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce by September 30th each year.

This flexibility makes Ohio relatively easy for homeschooling families.
