Is Georgia easy to homeschool in?
According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), the state has clear and manageable homeschooling laws that parents need to follow. First, parents must submit a declaration of intent to homeschool to the Georgia Department of Education within 30 days of starting homeschooling and by September 1 every year thereafter, which can be done online. Instruction must cover a minimum of the following subjects: reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The homeschool year must consist of at least 180 days of education with each day having at least 4.5 hours of instruction, unless the child is physically unable to comply with this requirement. Parents must also keep attendance records and submit them to the Georgia Department of Education by the end of each school year. Additionally, parents are required to write annual progress reports for their child in each of the required subjects and retain them for at least three years, although these reports are not required to be submitted to the state. Lastly, students must take a standardized test every three years beginning in the third grade; parents can choose the test, and the results do not need to be submitted to the state. The state does not require teacher qualifications or curriculum approval, which adds to the ease of homeschooling in Georgia. It is important for homeschooling families to familiarize themselves with the most up-to-date specific laws and regulations in Georgia, as well as any local district policies that may apply.
