Is Colorado easy to homeschool in?

According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), Colorado is generally considered to be a homeschool-friendly state, with relatively lenient homeschooling laws and regulations. Homeschooling in Colorado is legal, and parents have the right to educate their children at home as an alternative to public or private schooling.

In Colorado, homeschooling is governed by the Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.), specifically the Home-Based Education statute (C.R.S. 22-33-104.5). The statute requires parents who choose to homeschool to follow certain basic requirements, including:

  1. Notification: Parents must provide written notification to their local school district of their intent to homeschool at least 14 days prior to starting homeschooling.

  2. Academic Instruction: Parents are required to provide an education that includes communication skills, mathematics, history, civics, literature, science, and the Constitution of the United States. However, there are no specific curriculum requirements, and parents have the flexibility to choose or develop their own curriculum.

  3. Evaluation: Homeschooled students are required to undergo an evaluation after the completion of grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. The evaluation can be done by a qualified person chosen by the parent, and it can be an achievement test or an evaluation of a portfolio of the student's work.

  4. Attendance: Parents are responsible for maintaining attendance records for their homeschooled children.

Overall, Colorado's homeschooling laws are considered relatively easy to comply with compared to some other states. HSLDA will have the most up to date information on homeschooling laws in Colorado and every other state.
